tnr program

We are very excited and proud to roll-out our no-cost TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) program for our community.

TNR is the universally recognized method for managing community cat populations – both feral and stray – in a humane and effective manner by stabilizing the population, we improve the lives of these cats and reduce the numbers of animals entering local shelters.

  • Trap: Community cats are humanely trapped using safe, live box traps
  • Spay/neuter: The cats are transported to a vet clinic where they are spayed (female) and neutered (male) and are vaccinated against rabies. During this time, the tip of one of their ears is painlessly removed (ear-tipped), which serves as the universal visual marker to show that a cat has already been altered.
  • Return: After recovering from their surgery, the cats are returned to their original outdoor territory/home (colony) where they are familiar with their surroundings. TNR stops the breeding cycle of cats and therefore improves their lives while preventing reproduction.

Benefits of TNR

  • No more litters of kittens.
  • Stops stress from mating behaviors such as yowling or fighting.
  • Cats are healthy – the immunity that develops after a cat receives a rabies vaccination can last up to 7 years
  • TNR improves the cat’s life.

TNR is Smart, Compassionate and Cost-Effective:

  • Controls Cat Population to lower shelter intakes
  • It is the humane approach to manage community cat populations
  • Uses Volunteers, partnerships, and donations; not taxpayer dollars

Our Community/Feral Cat Caregivers now have an opportunity to have their colony spay/neutered along with each receiving a rabies vaccine and ear tipping for easy recognition that your beloved colony is being well cared for.

You have the option of AHS conducting the trapping and returning them to your colony’s location after the surgery, or you may trap the cats/kittens yourself, and we will provide the voucher for their spay/neuter, rabies vaccine, and ear tipping. If you are comfortable with trapping, but do not have traps, we can provide traps. Each trap will have a $20 deposit and will be refunded when returned in good condition. We have a limited supply of traps and will contact you when traps are available.

TNR saves lives; please be a Life Saver and fill out the application to give your feral/community cats/kittens the opportunity to have an even better life. Use the online form below or, if you prefer, the PDF application. It can be accessed with the button below.

Information on Cat(s)

Once approved, if you are doing the trapping yourself, you will receive an E-MAIL with the voucher for the TNR of the cats listed on your application. You will then be responsible for making the appointment with the Vet you have been appointed to use. If you need us to supply the traps, there is a $20 deposit per trap which will be refunded when traps are returned in good shape. We will let you know the date for available traps.

If AHS is doing the trapping, we will add you to our list and will contact you with a date for trapping.

Drop-off times for surgery are 8 AM, and pickup times are 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM.

TNR Services - TNR Cats will be spayed/neutered. Cats will receive a rabies vaccine. Cats will be ear tipped, so they will be easily identified that they are being cared for. I understand there is some risk of injury or death in the procedure and the use of anesthetic and drugs.

If the cat is pregnant at the time of surgery, I understand that the outcome will be left to the veterinarian’s discretion.

I agree that any cat who is medically untreatable or in severe or chronic pain will be humanely euthanized at the veterinarian’s discretion while the cat is under anesthesia.

I understand I will be notified post-euthanasia. I give consent to Audrain Humane Society members and volunteers to perform trappings on my property and will inform neighbors of the program.

I hereby release Audrain Humane Society and the Vet performing the surgery from any liability arising from the performance of the procedures listed above.
